Biography
Portuguese cellist João Pedro Gonçalves combines a performing career as a soloist and chamber musician with his work as a teacher.
As a soloist, he has appeared with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Belgian National Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Young Belgian Strings, Casco Phil, Bryggen Orchestra, Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie and Orquestra Metropolitana, among others. His musical collaborations have included artists such as Augustin Dumay and Frank Braley, as well as conductors Lorenzo Viotti, Gustavo Dudamel and Giancarlo Guerrero.
João has received several prizes and distinctions, including the Prémio Fundação Inatel (2019) and the Prémio Jovens Músicos (2021), where he was also awarded the Maestro Silva Pereira Prize – Young Musician of the Year 2020/21. He was a finalist at the Suggia International Award at Casa da Música in 2022 and, in 2024, received the Audience Award at the Schiermonnikoog Festival and the Prix Jean-Nicolas Firmenich at the Verbier Festival.

His musical education began in Lisbon with Ana Cláudia Serrão at Orquestra Geração, later continuing his studies with Marco Pereira and Paulo Gaio Lima. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel with Jeroen Reuling. He was also Artist-in-Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel under the guidance of Gary Hoffman and Jeroen Reuling.
Since September 2024, he has been a guest teacher at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel, working alongside Stéphanie Huang.
João plays a 1927 cello by Dante Guastalla, generously loaned by Mr. Philippe Tournay and the Strings for Talent Foundation.
